So You Wanna Be A Vegan

Turns out my personal care physician is my greatest advocate in converting to a whole foods, plant-based diet. She was the one who suggested it after learning of yet another health scare. After reviewing notes from my OBGYN at my last appointment 4 weeks ago and listening to my health fears and complaints she flat-out asked if I would be interested and willing to switch to a plant-based diet.

I was shocked. Never did I imagine my PCP taking this diet seriously. As someone who’s done a lot of research and tried every diet under the sun, this is the first time any of my doctors have given credence to a particular way of eating and how it affects one’s health. 

She explained that she just returned from a major medical conference, focusing on nutrition, and she was convinced by the evidence that a whole food, plant-based diet is the healthiest way to eat. 

Hearing her thoughts was a huge relief. Finally! A doctor who has reviewed the evidence and is encouraging that I eat a particular way. With so much confusing and conflicting information, I’m grateful to finally get some answers and have a powerful advocate on my side. 

I said yes, of course I’d be willing to try a whole foods, plant-based diet. She ordered a standard blood panel to check my thyroid, a1c, fasting blood glucose, liver and kidney function, calcium, etc… After waiting a few weeks I went for the testing and learned that I was also officially prediabetic. Yes ladies and gentleman, yet another risk factor. Precancer, prehypertension, prediabetes, obese, and multiple sclerosis. I’m just the pinnacle of health.

Needless to say I officially hit rock-bottom after receiving those results. There’s only so much a gal can take.
